Hybrids offer consumption and emissions benefits
Traditional and Plug-in Hybrids have steadily grown their presence in South Africa, led by models like the Toyota Corolla Cross. When it comes to fuel consumption, PHEVs use the least, followed by HEVs, with petrol and diesel ICE vehicles trailing. Notably, small petrol engines come close to hybrid efficiency, but larger engines fall behind.

New vehicle sales strengthen in early 2025
Following a tough 2024, South Africa’s new vehicle market is showing signs of recovery. February sales rose 7.1% year-on-year, with Lightstone projecting 5% growth for 2025. Lower interest rates and stable inflation are helping, though a proposed VAT hike may dampen momentum. The Crossover/SUV remains the top-performing bodyshape, and while Hybrid and EV growth has slowed, vehicle price inflation continues to sit below headline CPI.
