More significantly, new vehicle sales in 2023 are 0.8% ahead of volumes recorded in the same period in 2019, an indication that the market is running ahead of pre-Covid levels.

We expect the market to grow in 2023 despite continued macroeconomic pressures. GDP is expected to grow at significantly lower levels in 2023 compared to 2022, but the Rand appears to be steadying against major global currencies. Headline consumer inflation is projected to drop back within the Reserve Bank’s 3% - 6% target range and the Reserve Bank may end the current cycle of interest rate hikes before the end of the year. The global shortage in semi-conductors is easing and manufacturers are returning to normal production schedules. New vehicle sales in 2023 (see graph below) are anticipated to reach around 541 000 units, of which 511 000 are Light vehicles (Passenger and Light Commercial). Overall, we expect new vehicle sales to grow by around 2% in 2023, lower than our original forecast of 4%.
